Bart, Calvin, and Dennis the Menace: Dealing with Difficult Students

Objectives

  • List characteristics of the adult learner.
  • List external sources of difficulty in learning for students.
  • List internal sources of difficulty for the student.
  • Be able to consider options to change sources of difficulty.
  • Be able to respond to specific student concerns.

Description

We all have our favorite students…the ones who know it all, but who don’t test well.

The student who “deserves” to pass because of their other commitments.

The student who has a dozen years experience, but has trouble with the week one test. The list goes on and on.

This class will take the educator through the process of creating class rules that help prevent the troublesome student from creating a troublesome classroom.

Description

ACLS is no longer the lecture hall based program that fails more students than it passes, but that doesn’t mean the fear doesn’t exist among students today.

This class will prepare the advanced level provider to understand the algorithms in a much more direct way, simplifying the material into sixty minutes of airway and cardiac discussion.

This conference session will not replace an ACLS initial or refresher provider course, but is designed to make the material easier to understand for those who took the program and may still have difficulty understanding concepts from the course, or for those about to take the course who would like a preparation program.

Description

Capnography has been described as being for EMS in the 21st century what the ECG was for the 21st century.

Measuring exhaled carbon dioxide has the value to the street level EMS provider of not only confirming correct endotracheal tube placement, but also in determining the level of shock a patient is in, to diagnose respiratory illness differentiating between bronchospastic and other ailments, and to provide additional patient information on perfusion and other metabolic states.

This session will get providers to understand the 21st century vital sign both from a clinical and a risk management standpoint.

He really showed me the importance of capnography and how I can use it every day.

Description

This session’s goals are to discuss bias confirmation and other educational and logical fallacies which contribute to errors and inefficiencies.

Many of us complain about patients who self diagnose conditions via WebMD or other online systems, but how many of us are guilty of continuing bad care, poor practice, and average at best service?

This session is designed for those willing to look in the mirror and consider their own actions as it relates ot their care at the BLS, ALS, or critical care levels.
