Corvallis Firefighter in Opioid Investigation

Corvallis Firefighter in Opioid Investigation

A Corvallis Firefighter in opioid investigation by city investigators has resigned their position.

Per a city press release, the City of Corvallis had opened an investigation after receiving information on December 7 that a Corvallis firefighter assigned to an ambulance took opioids from the vehicle’s onboard supply.

“These thefts constitute a grave breach of the public trust,” City Manager Mark Shepard said. “Corvallis Fire Department employees, like all City employees, are held to the highest standards of ethics and accountability. The City of Corvallis is committed to working with our partners and getting to the bottom of these thefts.”

Sherpard continued, “We are working with Corvallis Professional Firefighters, our local firefighter union, to review our internal procedures and add new controls where appropriate to ensure that this does not happen again.”

Firefighters have made multiple headlines from criminal behavior in recent months. A Texas firefighter has been charged with murder and Paramedic Edward Blake was accused of being a serial rapist.

Corvallis Firefighter in Opioid Investigation Continues

Access to these dangerous and highly addictive narcotics is tightly controlled by Fire Department policy and federal drug laws. According to the preliminary investigation, the firefighter falsified documents and supply logs to cover up repeated thefts over a period of at least 18 months. The firefighter resigned at the outset of the City’s investigation on December 8.

Investigators said the firefighter falsified documents and supply logs to cover up repeated thefts over a period of at least 18 months.

Details of the investigation have been turned over to the Oregon Health Authority. The City of Corvallis is cooperating fully with the Oregon Health Authority’s investigation.

Zephi Trevino: Victim Or Murderess

Zephi Trevino

Zephi Trevino, is a Texas teen is accused of Capital Murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a man that occurred when she was 16. Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot intends to charge her as an adult pending a January 4, 2021 hearing per a Dallas news story.

Zephi Trevino

Her mother and other advocates, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Kim Kardashian West, say she is a victim of sex trafficking, not a killer.

Zephi Trevino

Zephaniah Trevino, now 17, is one of three people charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of Carlos Arajeni-Arriaza Morillo, 24. He was killed in a Grand Prarie apartment in August 2019. Zephi Trevino

Another defendant, Philip Baldenegro, then 18, admitted to fatally shooting Morillo and shooting and injuring another man as part of a robbery attempt. He and Jesse Martinez, then 19, are all charged in the case. Attorney David Finn represents Baldenegro. “She brought the guys to the apartment and set the whole thing up,” said Finn.

Zephi Trevino’s parents and Baldenegro’s attorney agree the men were there to have sex with Zephi, but Zephi’s parents claim Baldenegro was forcing their daughter to have sex for money. Baldenegro’s attorney says his client admits he pulled the trigger, but he is not a pimp. “She is no victim. My client Philip Baldenegro is 19 and I think she was 16 at the time. They had a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship that is born out on my client’s cellphone,” said Finn. “She engineered, organized, executed the entire plan,” Finn said.

Zephi Trevino

Zephi Trevino Background

Zephaniah, or “Zephi” as she’s known to friends and family, was a typical teenager in her Grand Prairie, Texas community. Kind, outgoing, and the youngest of four siblings raised in a loving home, she was involved in activities from her church worship team to pitching for her high school softball team.

Zephi Trevino

Trevino’s mom, Crystal Trevino, told local media her daughter was offered a plea deal that would give her 10 years in prison, but declined. Crystal said her daughter played sports and was involved in her church before she fell in with the wrong crowd, saying the plight of her daughter Zephi Trevino is “a mother’s worst nightmare.”

Zephi Trevino Case

Crystal Trevino says her daughter was offered a ten year plea deal, which she declined. She faces up to 40 years in prison. Trevino’s case has caught the attention of numerous celebrities.

Zephi Trevino

Civil rights lawyer Justin Moore is helping the family and helped get the attention of Jason Flom, a founding board member of The Innocence Project. Flom says he thinks Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot should take a closer look at the case. “On what planet does it make sense that we are going to charge her with capital murder? It’s a disastrously failed social policy,” Flom said. The Innocence Project, has helped secure the release of hundreds of wrongfully convicted people.

Zephi Trevino, John Creuzot, and Dominque Alexander

The case also presents an interesting challenge for Creuzot.

Recently, former Chief of Police Reneé Hall was reported to be in an inappropriate relationship with convicted felon and local activist Dominique Alexander. The public report hastened Hall’s exit as police chief and her depature was announced less than twenty-four hours after the report. Creuzot has not been seen out front on sex trafficking issues unlike the local US Attorney’s Office who recently arrested a local man for sex trafficking.

Additionally, like Reneé Hall, Creuzot is known to be friendly with Dominque Alexander and there are multiple sources who indicate Creuzot made a nonprosecution with Alexander and Next Generation Action Network in return for not endangering his election campaign with Alexander’s activism in certain neighborhoods. John Creuzot and his office are prohibited from speaking about the Trevino case, but he is noticable silent on relationships with both Alexander and Judge Audrey Moorehead, recently arrested for DWI.

Sex trafficking is an important training topic to fire and EMS responders. Never Forget 9-11 Foundation plans programming around this subject ion 2021.

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

“The First Five” to receive COVID19 Vaccine in our nation’s capital have been announced. Washington D.C. officials have reported that five members of the D.C. Fire and EMS will be among the first in the district to receive the COVID19 vaccine on Wednesday.

The five members, dubbed “The First Five” in a district press release, are Acting Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly, Medical Director Dr. Robert Holman, Lts. Joseph Papariello and Keishea Jackson and Firefighter-EMT Julio Quinteros.

“Today, we have hope. After a long and tragic nine months, help is finally on the way,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement. “The First Five are sending a strong message about the importance of this vaccine to protect them, their families and loved ones, their patients and coworkers, and our entire city.”

Kaiser Permanente is distributing the vaccine when it receives its initial doses this Wednesday. The district will receive an initial allotment of 6,825 doses that will be distributed between Kaiser Permanente and five other hospitals. The follow other parts of the country in vaccine distrubution including New York where Sandra Lindsay received the first dose in a non-trial setting.

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

“I’m getting vaccinated for my city. In the last nine months, I’ve seen COVID devastate my department,” said Jackson, one of The First Five, in a statement. “I’ve seen my brothers and sisters go into the hospital. I’ve seen them with severe symptoms – things we never thought we would see. I’m getting vaccinated for my coworkers, I’m getting vaccinated for my family, and I’m getting vaccinated to make a change.”

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

Some jurisdictions are moving fire and EMS out of the initial distribution of vaccinations despite a push by the International Association of Firefighters and others. Part of the reason may be the public firefighter unions in New York saying more than fifty percent of their members will not take it.

Sandra Lindsay, Critical Care Nurse, Is First To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

Sandra Lindsay

Sandra Lindsay, a critical care nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, received the first COVID19 vaccine dose in the United States.

The shot was administered by Dr. Michelle Chester, director of Northwell Health employee health services and the injection was broadcast across multiple platforms.

“This is a special moment, a special day. This is what everyone has been waiting for,” said Dr. Yves Duroseau, MD, chair of emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital. “To hopefully see this is the beginning of the end of the COVID issue.”

Dr. Duroseau urged New Yorkers to continue to comply with safety measures like mask wearing and social distancing even as the vaccine begins to be deployed.

Despite an International Association of Firefighters push to be at the front of the line for COVID19 vaccine delivery, more than half of FDNY firefighters said they would decline the COVID19 vaccine if offered.

Adel Abdul Bary – Osama bin Laden Lieutenant Freed From Prison

Adel Abdul Bary

Adel Abdul Bary, a former Osama bin Laden lieutenant has been freed from prison after a Manhattan judge cited his obesity as a reason for his release.

Bary, the former Osama bin Laden henchman convicted in two deadly 1998 bombings is free and living in the UK this week after being released early. This was due to Manhattan federal judge Lewis Kaplan who agreed the terrorist was way too obese to survive the coronavirus behind bars.

Adel Abdel Bary, 60, had spent twenty-one years in a New Jersey prison for his role in the 1998 al Qaeda bombings of two US embassies in Africa that killed 224 people, including 12 Americans. He was not involved with September 11.

Adel Abdul Bary

“Defendant’s obesity and somewhat advanced age make COVID-19 significantly more risky to him than to the average person,” US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan wrote in granting the release.

Attorneys asked that Adel Abdul Bary be let out sooner, citing their client’s age, girth, and asthma.

“Mr. Bary’s continued incarceration now significantly increases his risk of infection, which could wreak disastrous health outcomes,” his lawyer wrote in court documents.

While prosecutors didn’t agree that Bary’s age made him more at risk to catch COVID-19, they did concede his body mass index of 36 did.

“The defendant’s obesity is an extraordinary and compelling reason that could justify a reduction of his sentence in light of the current pandemic,” they wrote.

The 230-pound terrorist was freed from prison Oct. 9 and from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility on Wednesday, when he was handed over to UK officials.

Adel Abdul Bary — whose son, British rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, is an Islamist militant — was reunited with his wife, Ragaa, who lives in a $1 million-plus apartment in London, Britain’s Sun newspaper reported.

His return to the UK couldn’t be blocked because he was granted asylum there in 1997 — before being arrested in 1999 and extradited to the US to stand trial in 2012.

He had been sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2015 but received credit for the years he spent behind bars in Britain while fighting extradition.

Officials couldn’t send him back to his native Egypt after his release because he could be at risk of death or torture, the Sun reported.

“His return remains a huge headache for the [UK] home secretary” — equivalent to the US secretary of state. “She is intent on ridding the country of threats, but here’s a notorious terrorist dumped right on her doorstep,” a source told the Sun.

Adel Abdul Bary Freedom Outrages Victims Families

Bary’s immigration lawyer said, “After all this time, all Mr. Bary wants is to enjoy a quiet life with his family, but Edith Bartley, whose younger brother was among the victims, ripped the release.

“Just serving a sentence doesn’t mean that a person has been rehabilitated, doesn’t mean that their core thinking has changed,” she told the Times. “This is a person who can still do harm in the world.”

In 2015, Judge Kaplan said Adel Abdel Bary, then 54, benefitted from an “enormously generous plea bargain” that should have him out of jail in eight years when factoring in seventeen years of time already served. It is unclear why he chose to contradict himself on the terrorist’s freedom.

Lower COVID19 Vaccine Priority For EMS Per Cuomo

COVID19 Vaccine Priority

EMS will have a lower COVID19 vaccine priority per Governor Andrew Cuomo (NY) and Governor Jared Polis (CO).

EMS organizations are now calling on the state to let their workers get the first doses, but there may not be enough to go around due to poor planning and preparation.

COVID19 Vaccine Priority

The state is getting 170,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine if it gets FDA approval. The governor is hoping for that to happen soon. That first batch will be divvied up among healthcare workers and those in nursing homes.

Lower COVID19 Vaccine Priority While Others Refuse Vaccine

The International Association of Fire Chiefs and International Association of Firefighters lobbied for their responders to be at the front of the line despite a recent survey of a large union saying fifty percent of its membership did not want the vaccine.

Kidder County (ND) Ambulance Service Hit Hard By COVID19 December 2020

Kidder County Ambulance Service

Kidder County Ambulance Service, like their sister agencies in bigger departments, have been on the frontline in the fight against COVID19.

The Kidder County Ambulance Service takes care of a more rural part of the state, serving six communities — and they say it’s bad. It’s not just big city medical facilities facing capacity issues.

Kidder County Ambulance Service

In an interview MonaThompson, EMS Director for Kidder County Ambulance, said, “Come fall time where we started to see this really big increase in calls, it’s kind of gotten a little bit overwhelming.”

During the last two weeks, they have seen an influx of calls and say it’s beginning to take a mental and physical toll on their staff.

“The one thing I did tell them, just a few days ago, if they become overwhelmed, they just need to let me know and I’ll take them off of the call shift. We’ll have someone else cover their shift because I’m beginning to see that,” said Thompson.

The ambulance service is also responding to more calls that aren’t COVID19 related.

“They’ll put off their medical condition or putting off getting help in a timely fashion. So some of these patients are much more sick than what I’ve seen in the past. And unfortunately, I’ve seen also an increase in the death rate amongst our community members. That is really taking its toll,” Thompson continued.

Staff has been running non-stop responding to calls and some calls can take up to four hours before they’re done.

“Usually we’ll, in most out cases, we will go to Bismarck to transport our patients. But they’ve been at max capacity on a couple of different occasions so we had to take patients to Fargo and Jamestown too,” said Thompson.

Thompson says she has also responded to plenty of COVID19 calls that are young adults suffering with serious symptoms.

COVID19 has become more dangerous for responders than 9-11 both medically and politically. Secondary to COVID19 budget shortages several municipalities are considering laying off the very front line responders helping with COVID19 now including FDNY EMS.

This was a preventable tragedy though. Per our Foundation Board Member, Christopher Suprun, COVID19 did not have to be this bad. He wrote an article in March for Rolling Stone detailing his concerns that this would stretch our surge capacity nationally and would be Katrina like.

Kidder County Ambulance Service

Kidder County EMS is a licensed Basic Life Support (BLS) Service with enhanced skills and Advanced Life Support capabilities. They serve the area around Steele, North Dakota.
