Action, Lights, Camera: Basics for the Public Information Officer
Objectives
- Discuss opportunities and obligations for a public safety media program.
- List components of a press release.
- Critique live interview performances.
Description
Multi-alarm fires, interstate bus crashes, even multiple shooting victims. Fire and EMS providers can care for these issues with little difficulty, but when the media shows up, the real fear begins. This is EMS training most do not participate in.
This session will take on one of the toughest parts of the job: Providing on scene information to members of the press. Being able to provide information to the press during a crisis may not be the part of the job you signed up for, but it might be a requirement.
It can even be a benefit to the perception the public holds of your department if the right message gets out during the critical time period.

Glowing, Sniffles, and Ouchies: Nuclear Radiologic Incident Response
Objectives
- Define radiation.
- List characteristics of radioactive emitters.
- Discuss safety procedures for handling nuclear-radiation incidents.
- List signs and symptoms of radiation injury.
Description
Since 9/11 questions about the possibility of a “dirty bomb” strike have swirled about the public’s consciousness.
This program will discuss the medical and operations considerations for EMS responders to be prepared for these events.
Movies like the Peacemaker and the Sum of All Fears have provided us with a Hollywood glimpse into what might happen and TV news covered with great intensity the issues of both Chernobyl and more recently Japan’s nuclear issues.
While America has not suffered a major issue in nearly forty years, the threat looms large. This basic class will cover the foundation of response to both conventional and terrorism based attacks. Topics will include the physics of blast waves and a basic physiologic overview of radiation sickness. Additionally, specific decontamination methods will be introduced that are peculiar to radiologic contamination.

Houston – We’ve Got A Problem: Crew Resource Management For Fire and EMS
Objectives
- List similarities between fire, EMS, police, flight crews, and the military.
- List characteristics of avoidable ‘accidents’.
Description
Crew resource management, or CRM, typically refers to the application of team management concepts in the flight deck environment.
CRM also has a value on the fire ground and in EMS operations to ensure safety for everyone involved and the best care possible for the patients. This situational awareness of your surroundings is important to both the crew and patient victims in terms of managing the scene and caring for your patient.
