12 Leads: Reading Between The Lines (PreConference)

 

Objectives

  • The student should be able to describe the methods to acquire a 12 lead ECG.
  • Be able to recognize an AMI and localize to the left or right side of the heart.
  • List signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndromes including angina and AMI.
  • Use the 12 lead ECG to be able to identify and initiate treatment for patients experiencing acute reperfusion therapy via thrombolytics or interventional cath.
  • List conditions that may interfere with the provider’s ability to accurately assess the 12 lead ECG.

Description

This all day program will bring the ECG to life and take prehospital providers and nursing staff from a mindset of looking at rate and rhythm and for J points to fully understanding the power of the 12 Lead in everyday use.

The American Heart Association has recommended 12 lead ECGs for urban and suburban jurisdictions since 2000 but change can come slow. For those organizations that need either initial or refresher training in 12 lead acquistion and interpretation, this class is for you.

Starting with the fundamentals of ECG interpretation to ensure all students are on an even playing field, the course then goes into both standard 12 lead intrepretation, coverage of acute coronary syndromes and their relationship to 12 lead changes, andadvanced considerations for ACS and other events.

The course allows students to leave, ready to take on 12 lead patient opportunities in a confident frame of mind. This session will cover coronary anatomy and physiology, common approaches to the cardiac patient and why they may not be safe, electrical disturbances, and conditions which mimic AMI.

A to Z Patient Assessment (PreConference)

 

Objectives

  • List steps in a patient assessment of a trauma patient.
  • The student will execute a longer patient assessment using letters A-I to better evaluate a patient in both medical and trauma situations.
  • The student will be able to incorporate critical thinking into a basic A-I assessment format.
  • The student will discuss case studies corresponding to an A-I assessment where injuries and medical conditions were missed secondary to a lack of thorough assessment.

From A to Z, patients come in all shapes and sizes, but whether you use curriculum from the old EMT standards of ABCs, the ATLS, ATT, ITLS, or PHTLS programs using ABCDE, or the Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum of A through I, several fundamental factors appear again and again. These factors are key to solid patient assessment to maximize your chances of catching both the deadly and the unique during the Platinum Ten Minutes.

This preconference based session will look at patient assessments in an entertaining and engaging way to help responders better conceptualize the need for a thorough and detailed patient assessment on a consistent basis.

The program is interactive and providers are engaged regularly in discussion, activity, and role playing.

Description

Although a Mass [or Multi] Casualty Incident (MCI) occurring in your area seems remote, every public safety organization and jurisdiction must be prepared for the potential disaster. Early implementation of a management system will determine a department’s success or failure at saving lives.

The MCI doesn’t need to be a plane crash or terrorist event and will focus on, but a motor vehicle accident involving two minivans filled with people in a jurisdiction with one ambulance. Can your jurisdiction immediately handle eight to twelve patients? This management system is designed to assist organizations in planning, coordinating and managing an MCI.
