A Mercy Flight New York helicopter was involved in a fatal crash Tuesday killing both on board.

New York State Troopers confirmed that the medical helicopter was on a training flight at the time, crashed near Norton Road, between Edgerton and Ford roads, around 1:00 PM.

“At this point we don’t know why the helicopter went down,” Major Eugene Staniszewski said near the crash site.

The two pilots on board — James E. Sauer, 60, of Churchville, a Mercy Flight pilot and a retired New York State Police civilian pilot and Bell Helicopter employee and flight instructor Stewart M. Dietrick, 60, of Prosper, Texas — were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police. Their bodies were transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Mercy Flight is an EMS provider and a not-for-profit medical transport service that services western New York, including the Rochester region, as well as parts of northwestern Pennsylvania and Canada.

The Buffalo-based service has numerous flight bases around western New York. According to the Mercy Flight website, its flight headquarters is in Batavia, Genesee County. Staniszewski said the involved helicopter was from the Batavia Mercy Flight base.

This has been a hard week for the responder community in New York. Earlier this week we reported on another New York LODD in Brooklyn, New York taking the life of Ladder 170’s Timothy Klein.

Schuylkill County Death Toll Grows To 5

The death toll in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania motor vehicle collision grew to five as of latest reports from the county coroner’s office in the accident caused by whiteout conditions on Interstate 81 Monday, March 28, 2022.

In addition to those killed, several victims were flown by medevac to local trauma centers for treatment.

A state police trooper was among those injured when his patrol vehicle became part of the chain-reaction crash. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Two other state troopers died earlier this month near Interstate 95 outside Philadelphia in an unrelated accident.

There was a quick onset of heavy snow combined with fog conditions which created the dangerous conditions in Schuylkill County near Foster Township.

At least one tractor-trailer to caught fire and another truck carrying acetylene cylinders was near the blaze due to the accident.

Snow caused a sixty vehicle Schuylkill County whiteout MVC, or motor vehicle collision, which is reported to have included three confirmed fatalities.

Dr. David J. Moylan, the county coroner for Schuylkill County, cautioned the death toll “could run higher” because the search of the scene hadn’t yet been completed because of burning vehicles.

The fiery crash occurred on Interstate 81 at about 10:30 AM near Minersville, which is approximately one hundred miles northwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Reports indicate two dozen were transported to local hospitals.

Emergency crews from Dallas were dispatched to a Rowlett TX helicopter crash this afternoon per Dallas local news.

The National Transportation Safety Board is reportedly already on scene, but the pilot has died per public safety sources. This is believed to be the first fatality accident since the Eastern China Airlines crash earlier this week.

We have 90 firefighters (30 on shift) which staff four stations on a 24-hour basis. The Rowlett Fire Department responds to over 5,000 incidents annually.

The crash happened near Philadelphia on the southbound lanes near the Broad Street exit, around 12:40AM early Monday morning.

The Pennsylvania State Police have not yet released the names of the victims pending notifications to the family. An honor guard procession was seen leaving the scene earlier this morning.

AMR Ambulance Fire In Washington

AMR ambulance fire

An AMR ambulance fire in Washington state cost another unit and endangered two providers and patient.

A Washington American Medical Response ambulance was destroyed after catching fire early Saturday morning.

The ambulance caught fire in Federal Way with two AMR employees and a patient inside per local news.

The occupants escaped the rig and South King firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze. One AMR employee, an EMS provider, was taken for evaluation and been released.

2020 had several AMR ambulance accidents including the arrest of one of their drivers in Mississippi for drunk driving.

Sacramento Santa Flies – And Crashes

A Sacramento Santa flew – and crashed – when his paraglider flew into power lines. Santa was rescued after Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District cut through the red tape of power lines near Seventh Avenue in Rio Linda, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

The man was rescued just after 1:30 p.m. and was not injured, Vestal said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The man, dressed as Santa, was delivering candy canes to children in the neighborhood when he got stuck after 11 a.m., according to Capt. Chris Vestal. Photos shown on social media show the man riding a paramotor, a harness and glider powered by a small engine and fan.

No reindeer were injured as a result of this paragliding accident, but perhaps next time he can use a Ladder truck like FDNY.

One Dead, Two Arkansas Paramedics Shot

Two Arkansas Paramedics Shot

One person is dead and two Arkansas paramedics were wounded in a shooting Thursday while they responded to a medical emergency in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Pine Bluff (AR) police say the medics were at a residence in Pine Bluff aiding a woman with knee pain when the patient’s boyfriend, identified by authorities as Kevin Curl Jr., 22, approached them and began arguing with them per a local media source.

Curl was said to have pushed one of the paramedics who was then punched escalating the situation to gunfire. The two Arkansas paramedics shot were John Spriggs Sr., who reportedly punched Curl before Curl pulled out a firearm, and Joshua Godfrey, 35.

Curl shot both medics approximately three times in the chest, pelvic and abdominal areas, according to a police news release.

Authorities said Spriggs returned fire, striking Curl, who was later found dead inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest. Spriggs was found by officers lying on the ground next to the ambulance while Godfrey, 35, was found sitting in the back of the ambulance.

The paramedics were transported to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. The original female patient was also transported to the hospital for her injuries.

The shooting is under investigation by Pine Bluff detectives.

The Arkansas Ambulance Association released a statement on Facebook saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with members of the EASI family in Pine Bluff this morning. At last report, the EMS personnel are in serious but stable condition following surgery.

Limon Area Fire Protection District Hit By Tractor Trailer

A Colorado area ambulance from the Limon Area Fire Protection District was heavily damaged after being struck by a semi-truck at a crash scene on Tuesday.

Limon Area Fire Protection District crews had responded to the scene of a jack-knifed semi-trailer when another semi traveling on the icy roads crashed into their rig.

The agency posted photographs of the accident on Facebook, writing, “This is what happens when on scene and people don’t pay attention. People slow down when you see emergency vehicle’s.”

Limon County EMT Kim Clymer told the Oil City News that no one was in the ambulance at the time of the collision and that there were no injuries as a result of the secondary crash.

Saline County (IL) experienced an ambulance accident on Sunday when the driver went through a red light striking another driver. Earlier in the year FDNY Ladder 102 failed to yield and struck an ambulance.

Saline County Ambulance Accident

Per Issac Smith of the Southern Illinoisian two people were injured after a Saline County Ambulance Accident where an ambulance and pickup truck crashed Sunday.

According to a news release from Illinois State Police, the Saline County ambulance accident happened just after 8:30 p.m., when Brian Skinner, 25, of Christopher, approached the intersection of Illinois 142 while traveling north on U.S. 45. The ambulance lights and sirens were active as he approached the intersection.

Brian Baird, 44, of Harrisburg, was approaching the intersection traveling south on Illinois 142 in a truck.

ISP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Baird had a green light and proceeded through the intersection. Skinner had a red light and failed to yield, entering the intersection and striking Baird, according to the release.

The ambulance had two passengers, Kristopher Melia, 36, of Marion, and Lisa Wenzel, 56, of De Soto. Both were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries. Both drivers were uninjured, according to the release.

Skinner was cited with failure to yield at a stop intersection, police said. The accident was similar to others recently – including one in New York – when emergency drivers do not yield right of way.
