Dallas Fire Rescue: Kicking Patients Standard of Care?

Kicking Patients Standard of Care

The Dallas Fire Rescue Department appears to have new treatments at its disposal. Kicking patients standard of care now after former firefighter/paramedic Brad Cox was not charged after an internal public integrity investigation.

Kicking Patients Standard of Care

Cox was filmed on police body camera kicking a homeless man repeatedly in the head.

Dallas Fire has terminated Brad Cox, but the Texas Department of State Health Services still shows him with an active paramedic license.

One attorney in the area called the situation “tragic.”

“This situation should have been prosecuted, but instead the thin blue line returns to protect the fire service. This is why people take the law into their own hands,” she continued. “By not handling the situation appropriately we are encouraging every day citizens to act out because they know those held to the highest standards have no standards.”

Kicking Patients Standard of Care Nationwide

In 2020 a Fairfax paramedic was charged with assault. In that case police officers on scene were recording the incident on body worn cameras as was the case in Dallas. It is unclear why officers on scene in Dallas did not intervene during the assault.

More recently Edward Blake was sentenced after being labeled a serial rapist by local police officials who also acted when information was presented about him using department drugs to intoxicate his victims.

Officials say one woman told investigators Blake told her he was a Eugene Springfield firefighter and sent her photos of medical supplies and medications he claimed to have taken from an ambulance. The woman said she went to a motel with Blake, was choked unconscious and regained consciousness to find an IV in her arm. Blake is accused of drugging the woman with fentanyl and sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious.

Another woman told investigators she obtained controlled substances from Blake and was hospitalized multiple times, and that Blake would come into her hospital room and administer drugs to her through an IV.

Jeffrey Sanford Jr.

Jeffrey Sanford Jr., a former central Illinois paramedic, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a patient in an ambulance has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

On Tuesday, Judge Randy Rosenbaum said the paramedic destroyed the public trust in calling for an ambulance when choosing a sentence for Sanford.

Jeffrey Sanford Jr.

Jeffrey Sanford Jr. Case Background

In October Rosenbaum found the 48-year-old Jeffrey Sanford Jr., guilty of two counts of sexual assault in October after forcing a suicidal woman to perform oral sex in the back of an ambulance in July 2019. Judge Randy Rosenbaum noted when convicting Sanford that the victim had immediately reported the assault to hospital staff and that Sanford’s story had changed after DNA evidence tied him to the crime.

Champaign County Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Alferink also presented evidence linking Sanford to sexually inappropriate conduct with a 10-year-old girl, a woman who called for an ambulance and an 89-year-old woman with dementia. Sanford’s defense attorney, Anthony Bruno, acknowledged his client’s faults but argued for a lighter sentence based on Sanford’s more than 20-year career as a paramedic, adding that he had saved 25 cardiac arrest patients and delivered 36 babies.

Attacked: Brooklyn Hospital EMTs Robbed At Gunpoint

Brooklyn Hospital EMTs

Two Brooklyn Hospital EMTs were robbed at gunpoint when they responded to a fake 911 call at a New York City Housing Authority apartment building, officials and sources said Tuesday.

The EMTs were taking the elevator in a Sackman Street building — part of the Seth Low Houses — near Belmont Avenue in Brownsville about 11 p.m. Monday when a man stepped into the elevator as it reached the 11th floor and pulled a gun on them.

The gunman swiped their medical bag and ran off, officials said. The bag was later found inside the building, but the EMTs’ tablet and radio that linked them to the city’s 911 dispatch system was missing.

Neither EMT was harmed. The two work for Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, but also respond to 911 calls that city medics respond to, officials said.

The call that sent them to the Seth Low Houses turned out to be a false alarm, but it was not immediately clear if it was directly linked to the robbery, sources with knowledge of the case said.

Brooklyn Hospital EMTs – Not Only Victims

Violence against EMS personnel is a global issue. Research is desperately needed to determine why the number of incidents is so high and what can be done to better prevent harm to those who risk their lives to help others.

We’ve long known EMS personnel face a risk of occupational fatality similar to those of police and firefighters and a risk of nonfatal injury that’s much higher.

Dallas Police Officers Attacked

Dallas Police Officers Attacked

Per local news, four Dallas Police Officers were attacked Halloween night around 7:00 PM while assisting a motorist near Mesquite, Texas.

Two Dallas police officers along with two other officers from Mesquite were targeted, according to Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata. All four officers were in uniform at the time of the shooting. “They were waiting on a wrecker and directing traffic when all of the sudden bullets are coming their way,” said Mata.

Immediately following the initial shot, four or five additional shots were fired at the Dallas and Mesquite police officers forcing the officers to take cover. The officers were able to safely run toward the area of the gunshots in an attempt to locate a suspect or suspects.

As officers were running, they heard screaming coming from 8300 La Prada Drive. Mata said a 19 year-old believed to be the gunman was found and arrested for unlawful carrying of a weapon. His gun is now being tested to see it was indeed the weapon used in the shooting.  An investigation is proceeding.

Dallas Police Officers Attacked Per Police Association President Mike Mata

“…it absolutely was intentional and unfortunately, it’s a narrative that’s being carried across the country by a very small percentage, but vocal amount of people,” Mata said. He said across the country, there’s several recent examples of unsuspecting officers targeted for no reason. One high profile example of this includes the attack on officers in California in September.

Additionally, there have been multiple calls by candidates to defund the police and/or remove weapons from them. One candidate even suggested officers should be armed only with a flashlight and radio. Dallas Police officers have been increasingly attacked on the budget front by local city council members.

The fire department has launched an internal investigation.

“This action goes against the values we hold at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department,” Fairfax County Fire Chief John Butler said in a statement. “We respect our role in the community and strive to build and maintain public trust. We remain dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of our community and will continue to ensure that our members are held to the highest standards of the profession.”

The patient was in Fairfax County Police ustody while being transported to the hospital. The Fairfax County Police Department investigated the incident and released the body camera footage.
