FDNY EMS Terminates 36 Over COVID19

FDNY EMS Terminates 36 employees over the COVID19 vaccination mandate started last year under Mayor Bill deBlasio. The move came after the employees exhausted their last legal challenge to the workplace vaccine mandate.

The last-minute effort by a group of anti-vaccine municipal workers to avoid getting fired failed Friday, February 18, 2022. Mayor Eric Adams said other vaccine-resistant employees were finally getting the jab.

A Brooklyn federal judge rejected the group’s request to temporarily bar the city from terminating employees who have not been vaccinated. Similar suits failed in court, with the latest one arguing that the rules violate workers’ “fundamental religious and constitutional rights.”

FDNY EMS Terminates 36

“Plaintiffs have not met their burden of demonstrating their entitlement to the extraordinary remedy of a temporary restraining order,” declared Judge Diane Gujarati.

The vaccine mandate was implemented per city management after the Eastern District of New York judge’s ruling. New York City then terminated 36 FDNY EMS members for failing to get vaccinated, according to the Local 2507, which represents Fire Department EMS workers.

Public employees against the vaccine mandates received more bad news Friday when they lost on another legal front. United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor turned down a request by fourteen city Department of Education employees who were terminated after their requests for religious exemptions to city vaccine requirements was denied.

FDNY EMS Terminates 36 – The Culmination Of More Than A Year

The FDNY vaccination plan started in December 2020, but immeidately faced hurdles as up to fifty percent of FDNY responders said they would decline the vaccine. This number remained steady for many until their jobs were on the line until President Trump said to “get the vaccine.”

Do Not Transport Orders

Do Not Transport Order Given

Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMS) has issued do not transport orders for patients requiring intensive care as area ICUs are full with COVID19 patients. EMS providers are also bring told to ration oxygen.

Do Not Transport Order Given

Southern California has one of the country’s worst outbreaks of COVID19. ICU bed availability plunged to zero in Southern California last month as more and more people were admitted to hospital seeking treatment for the novel coronavirus.

Medical facilities do not have the space or providers to take in patients who do not have a chance of survival, according to the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency. The Do Not Transport orders are not necessarily out of the norm for military style triage.

As of Monday evening, there were 7,544 people hospitalized in Los Angeles due to Covid-19 and just 17 available adult ICU beds, according to county health data. Due to the shortage of beds, the county EMS said patients whose hearts have stopped, despite efforts of resuscitation, should no longer be transported to hospitals.

Do Not Transport Order Given

If there are no signs of breathing or a pulse, EMS will continue to perform resuscitation for at least 20 minutes, the EMS memo said. If the patient is stabilized after the period of resuscitation, the patient would then be transported to a hospital. If the patient is declared dead at the scene or if no pulse can be restored, paramedics will no longer transport the patient to the hospital.

Do Not Transport Orders

There is also an acute shortage of oxygen in Los Angeles and the nearby San Joaquin Valley, due to COVID19. It is putting pressure on the entire emergency medicine system and forcing EMS responders to conserve the supply.

In order to maintain normal circulation of the blood to organs and tissue needed for the body to function, EMS said an oxygen saturation of at least 90% will be sufficient. This does follow American Heart Association standards on resuscitation training.

Do Not Transport Order Given

California Gov. Gavin Newsom formed a task force to address the issue last week. It is working with local and state partners to help refill oxygen tanks and mobilize them to hospitals and facilities most in need, but he has faced mounting criticism after telling Californians to quarantine at home and he was seen dining with health industry executives at the opulent French Laundry.

These new orders are likely to increase the toll on EMS responders which was described this summer as more dangerous than 9-11. Smaller population states and communities have not been immune to the issues faced by EMS and compounding problems are healthcare providers attacking the ongoing immunization process.

Moderna COVID19 Vaccine Intentionally Destroyed

Moderna Vaccine Destroyed

500 Doses of the Moderna COVID19 vaccine were destroyed by a now-former employee at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, Wisconsin. The coronavirus vaccine vials were “intentionally removed”  from refrigeration, forcing officials to throw out nearly 500 doses, according to an internal investigation.

Moderna

Aurora Medical Center officials had initially suspected the Moderna vaccines, which must be kept between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, had inadvertently been left out at their Grafton hospital location on December 26.

A later investigation found the individual “acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration,” officials said Wednesday.

Moderna

The medical center, which is part of Advocate Aurora Health, has notified “appropriate authorities for further investigation” and added that the individual is no longer employed by Aurora. The individual has not been identified.

“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Aurora Health Care said, more than 21,000 health care workers had received the first of two injections at the company’s centers.

This news comes as providers and first responders across the country from New York to Texas are getting their initial doses and as the more contagious mutant UK version is seen in Colorado.

The vials can remain at room temperature for up to 12 hours. That allowed clinicians to salvage some of the doses.

FDNY COVID19 Vaccination Plan Begins

The Fire Department of New York – FDNY COVID19 vaccination plan began in earnest on Tuesday for the front line heroes facing the pandemic in the community.

“I’d like to thank the Department, Chief Medical Officer, the nurses and all the members who made this happen so quickly and worked so hard to bring this vaccine to our members. I have full confidence in the vaccine and its efficacy.

FDNY COVID19 Vaccination Plan Begins

I think this is the path back to what we would consider a normal life and we are encouraging all our members to participate,” says Fire Department of New York Uniformed Firefighters Association Health and Safety Officer Michael Schreiber, who received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine today along with other FDNY Firefighters.

UFA President Andrew Ansbro says, “I just received my first dose of the Moderna Vaccine and scheduled my second dose. I’m looking forward to society getting back to normal. I encourage all the members in the Department to sign up and get vaccinated.”

FDNY COVID19 Vaccination Plan Faces Uphill Battle

In early December a poll found fifty percent of FDNY firefighters would decline the vaccination.

The FDNY Moderna COVID-19 Vaccination Plan, conducted by the FDNY Bureau of Health Services (BHS) in conjunction with the Bureau of Operations, continues at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn, the FDNY EMS Academy at Fort Totten, and the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island.

COVID-19 vaccinations began on December 23, and will continue for the next several weeks. As of today, over 1,000 FDNY members have been vaccinated.

It is unclear if the current approved vaccination will work against the new UK COVID19 strain which has been found in Colorado via community transmission.

UK COVID19 Strain in Colorado

UK COVID19 Strain

The UK COVID19 strain has appeared in a Colorado man. He is the first person in the United States diagnosed with a new COVID-19 mutation that United Kingdom officials recently warned was significantly more contagious, according to state officials.

UK COVID19 Strain

The man, who lives in Elbert County, is in his 20s, has no travel history and no close contacts yet identified, state officials said in a Tuesday news release. The man remains in isolation, and contact tracing continues. A second case in the county is suspected, and both individuals were working in Simla, about an hour northeast of Colorado Springs.

UK COVID19 Strain in Colorado

Governor Jared Polis revealed the worrying news in a tweet, writing: ‘Today we discovered Colorado’s first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the UK. The health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will monitor this case, as well as all COVID-19 indicators, very closely.’

UK COVID19 Strain

An attached statement said the Colorado State Laboratory confirmed the case and notified the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

The new mutant strain may not be treated with the vaccine being distributed currently. It has not moved quickly enough to stop the cancellation of the NCAA’s college football Texas Bowl which was cancelled yesterday.

Texas Bowl Cancelled Due To COVID19

Texas Bowl

The Mercari Texas Bowl between Arkansas and TCU has been canceled due to COVID19 cases, bowl officials said Tuesday.

The game, which was scheduled for New Year’s Eve at NRG Stadium in Houston, was canceled because of an increase in positive COVID-19 tests, injuries and other circumstances within TCU’s program.

Texas Bowl

TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said in a statement that those issues left the Horned Frogs short of the Big 12’s threshold for player availability.

It was set to be Arkansas’ first bowl appearance since 2016. The Razorbacks received an invitation, despite a 3-7 record, because the NCAA waived win eligibility requirements this season due to scheduling difficulties stemming from the pandemic. The Razorbacks join Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee as SEC teams that accepted a bowl invitation but will not play in one because of COVID-19 issues with one of the participating teams.

TCU’s season concludes at 6-4. It is the second game the Horned Frogs had to cancel because of virus-related issues; they also canceled their season opener vs. SMU.

While the COVID19 vaccines are in the process of being distributed multiple social media posts state that at the current pace it will take ten years to innoculate everyone.

Texas Bowl – First Event Cancelled For COVID19 Since Christmas

Public health officials have been warning of a surge in COVID19 numbers since Thanksgiving and Christmas travel where more people traveled than almost any other time of the year.

Forget Rudolph, FDNY Ladder 13 Brings Santa

FDNY Ladder 13 Brings Santa

Forget Rudolph and the reindeers this year. Fire Department of New York – FDNY Ladder 13 brings Santa to the children of Ronald McDonald House New York. This time of year children there normally get a visit from the big man in red.

This year though, due to COVID19, a visit was considered too dangerous for the children there, many of whom have compromised immune systems.

FDNY Ladder 13 Brings Santa

Thirty-five families currently stay at the nonprofit center, all with children with various serious illnesses, including cancer. While COVID19 has caused 2020 to be a tough year for many, these children had it even tougher, and were ready for some Christmas cheer.

Santa knows who has been naughty and nice though and has many friends in the ranks of FDNY.

Instead of a flying sleigh this year, the kids got an up-close view of the big man himself, as he was able to go right up to their windows and say hello thanks to the help of an FDNY firetruck bucket. The joyful scene is being called “the miracle on 73rd Street.”

FDNY Ladder 13 Brings Santa Down The Block

Ladder 13 is housed with Engine 22 at 159 East 85th Street.

Ronald McDonald House holds a special place for Never Forget 9-11 Foundation. Our nonprofit provided organizational guidance and assistance to a Texas teen who formed his own nonprofit aimed at bringing baseball to kids with cancer, Strike Out Kids Cancer Foundation. To date, the organization has brought baseball to kids in multiple cities and states. The teen hopes to continue playing baseball in college.

CPR On COVID19 Air Passenger

CPR On COVID19 Air Passenger

Holiday madness for holiday goers as CPR on COVID19 air passenger was required on a recent United flight to Los Angeles.

In what was described as a terrifying ordeal for nearby passengers, the man was seen on the plane shaking and sweating and having a hard time breathing even before the flight took off.

His condition deteriorated rapidly once in the air and the captain made the decision to perform an emergency landing in order for the man to receive medical attention.

The crew asked if there were any doctors onboard and a number of people got up to help.

Some passengers detailed how during CPR they could hear the patient’s  rib bones crack as chest compressions were carried out before he started turning blue.

Tony Aldapa was one of the passengers on board who helped perform CPR on the man.

‘I got up out of my seat, let them know “Hey I know CPR” and asked “Do you need some extra help?” I can tap in and help with chest compressions. That’s how it all started.

‘By the point that I got there to the point where the fire department got on board, it was at least 45 minutes,’ Aldapa told press outlets.

‘There was no mouth-to-mouth at all. We were doing chest compressions and they had him on the oxygen mask from the plane, then once we had a medical bag that is kept on board we used an ambu-bag which is a bag that you squeeze to give breaths, that’s what we used for breathing,’ Aldapa continued when talking about CPR On COVID19 Air Passenger that has yet to be identified.

While talking to New Orleans EMS responders, the man’s wife admitted that her husband had tested positive for coronavirus meaning he likely lied when checking in for the flight.

During check-in, all United passengers have to self-report on whether they have experienced any coronavirus symptoms.

After the passenger was offloaded in New Orleans, his seat was wiped down, and the plane, a Boeing 737-900 with capacity for 179 people, continued its journey to Los Angeles.

CPR On COVID19 Air Passenger

CPR on a passenger is difficult in the best of circumstances. Our own board member, Christopher Suprun, has been on several flights where a medical emergency occured – everything from a illness that is getting worse to a person unconscious.

COVID19 CPR In Air

US commercial airlines carry a medical kit, known by multiple names, that can be opened by medical personnel with permission of the Pilot-in-Charge. This equipment can contain IV fluids, IV catheters, and cardiac drugs including epinephrine, lidocaine, and atropine.

United Airlines Statement: CPR On COVID19 Air Passenger

Aldapa described completing the flight “covered in my own sweat and in that man’s urine.”

He continued “I knew the risks involved in performing CPR on someone that potentially has COVID but I made the choice to do so anyways. I spoke with the passengers wife about his medical history and she never mentioned he was positive, she said he was scheduled to have a test done in LA.”

It is unclear how many of the passengers might develop symptoms given the enclosed air system on commercial flights.

The Centers for Disease Control has contacted United Airlines regarding this flight and passenger. It is unclear if they have also sough passenger manifests or identified the air crew and passengers who provided care to the COVID19 positive patient.

United issued the following statements:

‘Our flight diverted to New Orleans due to a medical emergency and paramedics transported the passenger to a local hospital where the individual was pronounced deceased. We have been in touch with his family and have extended our sincerest condolences to them for their loss.

‘At the time of the diversion, we were informed he had suffered a cardiac arrest, so passengers were given the option to take a later flight or continue on with their travel plans.

Now that the CDC has contacted us directly, we are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection.

‘The health and safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority, which is why we have various policies and procedures in place such as mask mandates and requiring customers to complete a ‘Ready-to-Fly’ checklist before the flight acknowledging they have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days and do not have COVID-related symptoms,’ the statement read.

Passengers who traveled on the fateful flight unloaded a barrage of questions to United on social media asking the same questions any sensible person would ask.

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

“The First Five” to receive COVID19 Vaccine in our nation’s capital have been announced. Washington D.C. officials have reported that five members of the D.C. Fire and EMS will be among the first in the district to receive the COVID19 vaccine on Wednesday.

The five members, dubbed “The First Five” in a district press release, are Acting Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly, Medical Director Dr. Robert Holman, Lts. Joseph Papariello and Keishea Jackson and Firefighter-EMT Julio Quinteros.

“Today, we have hope. After a long and tragic nine months, help is finally on the way,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement. “The First Five are sending a strong message about the importance of this vaccine to protect them, their families and loved ones, their patients and coworkers, and our entire city.”

Kaiser Permanente is distributing the vaccine when it receives its initial doses this Wednesday. The district will receive an initial allotment of 6,825 doses that will be distributed between Kaiser Permanente and five other hospitals. The follow other parts of the country in vaccine distrubution including New York where Sandra Lindsay received the first dose in a non-trial setting.

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

“I’m getting vaccinated for my city. In the last nine months, I’ve seen COVID devastate my department,” said Jackson, one of The First Five, in a statement. “I’ve seen my brothers and sisters go into the hospital. I’ve seen them with severe symptoms – things we never thought we would see. I’m getting vaccinated for my coworkers, I’m getting vaccinated for my family, and I’m getting vaccinated to make a change.”

The First Five To Receive COVID19 Vaccine

Some jurisdictions are moving fire and EMS out of the initial distribution of vaccinations despite a push by the International Association of Firefighters and others. Part of the reason may be the public firefighter unions in New York saying more than fifty percent of their members will not take it.
