Michael Greenhaw, 43, a former Alabama paramedic was sentenced Tuesday for stealing from more than 100 vials of fentanyl and replacing their contents with saline.

Michael Greenhaw

Greenhaw, was ordered by a federal judge to serve fifty-one months in prison after pleading guilty in October 2019 to one count of tampering with a consumer product. Greenhaw, while working as a supervisory paramedic at First Response Ambulance Service, removed the contents of 129 fentanyl citrate vials for personal use and then refilled the vials with saline, according to a plea agreement. The thefts took place during Greenhaw’s shifts between April and August 2018.

US Attorney Statement on Michael Greenhaw

“Greenhaw put vulnerable patients in grave danger by replacing fentanyl citrate with saline in vials that he knew were intended to be administered to critically ill or injured patients,” U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona said in a statement. “Greenhaw’s criminal conduct undermines the tireless efforts of first responders who work hard to make sure that patients receive the necessary emergency medical care.”

The case was investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations Miami Field Office, the Decatur Police Department, and the Arab Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Stuart Burrell serving as lead prosecutor.

A Corvallis firefighter resigned during an investigation of their use of department narcotics.

Oregon paramedic Edward Augustus Blake is accused drugging and raping multiple women. He has now been charged with federal crimes for allegedly obtaining controlled substances illegally through his EMS position.

Edward Augustus Blake, 44, a Eugene Springfield Fire Department medic, was charged with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, morphine, ketamine and midazolam after allegedly picking up 343 vials of the drugs from a pharmacy and never entering them into his ambulance’s inventory, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Oregon.

“Instead, Blake used the drugs to sexually assault at least three local women,” the press release stated.

Blake was charged last year with first-degree rape, sodomy, strangulation, causing another person to ingest a controlled substance, and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in Lane County Circuit Court. He is in state custody pending trial on those charges.

Blake is expected to make his first appearance in federal court in the coming weeks. Department of Justice investigators are seeking the public’s help identifying potential additional victims in the case and have asked anyone with information to contact the FBI or submit an online tip.

Edward Augustus Blake Charges

Officials say one woman told investigators Blake told her he was a Eugene Springfield firefighter and sent her photos of medical supplies and medications he claimed to have taken from an ambulance. The woman said she went to a motel with Blake, was choked unconscious and regained consciousness to find an IV in her arm. Blake is accused of drugging the woman with fentanyl and sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious.

Another woman told investigators she obtained controlled substances from Blake and was hospitalized multiple times, and that Blake would come into her hospital room and administer drugs to her through an IV.

“She recalled Blake telling her to sell the drugs, but warned her not to let anyone keep the vials, because they could be traced back to him,” the U.S. Attorney’s statement read.

Paramedic Arrested for Pointing Gun

A 34-year-old paramedic with Mobile Life Support Services (MLSS), Brandon Selleck, has been arrested by New York State Police for pointing a handgun at the victim during a domestic dispute.

The Troopers say that on July 7, just before 1:00 am, Selleck was involved in a domestic dispute in Wappingers Falls, leading the other party to report it to police.

Several hours later, at 12:30 pm, Troopers arrested Selleck at work at the Mobile Life ambulance station in Buchanan.  The paramedic was charged with felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon and the misdemeanors of Menacing with a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  He was released on his own recognizance.

Selleck’s charge of possession of a controlled substance is because he had prescription amphetamines without a valid prescription. It is unclear if his behavior is related to undiagnoses mental health issues.

Other MLSS Paramedic Comments

Selleck’s coworkers are angered that Mobile Life allowed him to return to work the following day.  “He pointed a gun during an argument.  That’s frightening,” said a fellow MLSS paramedic.  A second medic added “To make it worse, he supposedly had illegal amphetamines.  If he is using drugs and is capable of pointing a pistol at another person, we don’t feel safe around him.”  The coworkers asked to have their identities withheld for fear of retaliation by Selleck.
